Brent Robie was no stranger to the world of multi-media production when he walked through the doors of MATV in May of 2006. He had worked over 30 years as a graphic designer, and dabbled in film and video at an early age. He did pre-computer age audio-visual slide production, was the designer at a sign company, and did many years of print design on a freelance basis. He once worked on a TV commercial promoting the radio station WPLJ in New York, which involved color xeroxing every other frame of rock star footage, colorizing it with crayons and such, and reanimating it. From hand-drawn animation and manual graphic design, Brent embraced the beginning of the computer age, working on early versions of Photoshop and other graphic design software. He decided to check out MATV partly to update his video production skills and make him more marketable in his career, and partly to get to know the Malden community and contribute in any way he can. Brent moved to Malden in 2003. ; Always a community-minded individual, Brent has been a member of food co-ops and the Boston Building Materials Co-op. He's active in progressive issues, and interested in meeting people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. "It's been a terrific experience being at MATV, " says Brent. "Even though I now have a camera and editing system for working at home, I've also been active down here at the station. I really like the collaboration with so many different people." Brent has directed and crewed on Malden Square on Friday mornings and works as a regular crew member for What Is.?. He has both shot and edited programs documenting community events, such as the Immigration Forum at the Malden UU Church, and produced a program about local political activist Tom Feagley's visit to Cuba as part of the Witness Against Torture organization. Brent took on the considerable task of editing the 2006 Window Arts Malden Opening Celebration, culling through hours of videotape shot by several different volunteers with varying levels of experience. He was able to put together a slickly produced program, richly portraying this unique premiere art event in Malden. The Window Arts 2007 committee recently held a planning meeting at MATV and screened the half-hour video. All were awed and inspired by what they, themselves, had accomplished as vividly portrayed by the Window Arts video. Most recently, Brent edited the footage from the kickoff event for the Malden Visioning Project, a citywide initiative sponsored by the Malden Planning Board. The event drew hundreds of community members together at City Hall to give their input into a "Malden Vision." By lending his talents in media production, Brent has made a difference in his own community. Social activism is the roots of community television and Brent exemplifies the use of community TV to promote social change. Currently, Brent is working on his own program, A Walk in the Garden, with his wife Jane. It will focus on landscaping and organic gardening. The two are active gardeners and enjoy learning about various plant species, and how to create a garden in harmony with nature. They will be doing segments about how to deal with invasive plant species and other gardening issues.
